Adobe CEO has no beef with Apple, no answer for poor Flash performance on Android (video)

The Adobe-Apple Flash war used to be one of the juiciest catfights around, but, much like two aging boxers, both sides now appear willing to act like adults put it all behind them. Speaking at yesterday's D9 conference in Palos Verdes, California, Adobe head Shantanu Narayen confirmed that he and Steve Jobs have reached an unofficial armistice, bringing an end to their prolonged war of words. According to the CEO, Apple's Flash issues stemmed from the company's "business model," rather than any legitimate concerns over quality. "It's control over the app store that's at issue here," Narayen said, implying that Flash's wide-ranging platform compatibility may not have jibed with the Cupertino ethos. He went on to remind moderator Walt Mossberg that developers can still use Adobe's AIR software to get their products to the App Store, adding that his company is looking forward to the rise of HTML5 and "actively contributing" to its development.

Mossberg, meanwhile, seemed to blindside Narayen when he brought up Flash's poor performance on Android devices. "I have yet to test a single one where Flash tests really well," the columnist claimed. "I'm sorry, but it's true." Narayen sputtered a bit, before pointing to the BlackBerry PlayBook as an example of the progress that Flash has made. When Mossberg reminded him that the PlayBook doesn't run on Android, the CEO not-so-subtly sidestepped the question by emptily declaring that Adobe's mission is simply to provide people with the best tools to create content. Apparently satisfied with this non-answer, Mossberg changed the subject back to Apple, allowing Narayen to wax poetic about their new Pax Romana -- and, perhaps, to breathe a sigh of relief. Cybersecurity Research Consortium: New Tech on the Way

An 18-month-old cybersecurity research consortium organized by Northrop Grumman is making progress and should have technologies ready to deploy in about a year, officials said Wednesday.

The Northrop Grumman Cybersecurity Research Consortium, a five-year partnership between the defense contractor and three leading computer science universities, has focused on improving mobile and cloud security and on reducing the cost of recovery from cyberattacks, said Robert Brammer, vice president of advanced technology and CTO at Northrop Grumman Information Systems.

The consortium is an important way for university researchers to tackle long-term issues, not just respond to recent attacks, participants said. "There is no silver bullet here," said Ronald Rivest, a computer science professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "We must aim for steady progress here, not perfection."

Cloud computing has been a high priority for the consortium and for Northrop Grumman customers, Brammer said during a press conference to update the consortium's work. The consortium members, also including Carnegie Mellon University and Purdue University, have been researching how to use low-cost processors to perform specialized encryption tasks in a cloud environment and on digital watermarking technologies as a way to establish the integrity of data, he said.

"These projects have shown the ability in a lab environment to withstand various types of cloud cyberattacks," Brammer said. "We're beginning to test these techniques on larger scale [environments]."

Another research area is focused on infrastructure security, with one project working to optimize the configuration and location of security sensors on computer networks. "Our customers are all interested in reducing the fraction of their IT spending on infrastructure so that they can increase the fraction spent on mission-critical capabilities," Brammer said. "The key question here is, given a certain budget for things like firewalls, intrusion detection systems and prevention systems, how do you get the most bang for your buck?"

The sensor research is looking at ways to place sensors in a network "so you don't slow it down, you don't generate too many false alarms, and you don't have to spend too much on sensors," added Eugene Spafford, a computer science professor at Purdue.

One of MIT's research projects is focusing on ways to recover from attacks by returning a computer to a recently clean state, Rivest said. MIT's research is attempting to pinpoint the changes made to a computer's files by malware, then restore them, without discarding legitimate changes made, he said.

"Many machines are compromised daily," he said. "Cleaning up after these inevitable compromises leads to days of wasted effort by either the end users or by systems administrators."

The MIT project seeks to automate system restoration by recording a computer's history and rolling back any changes caused by an attack, he said. MIT researchers have tested the automated system on Linux and found that it can "effectively recover from a number of real-world and synthetic attacks," Rivest said.

In some cases, Northrop Grumman will use the consortium's research in its customers' networks. The universities are also free to seek other ways to commercialize research that they've done in-house, Spafford said.

Asked how they viewed trends in cybersecurity, the experts gave guarded responses. Spafford said he's grown more pessimistic over time about cybersecurity, although there are several "bright spots."

"The pressure for the economics of moving things online is overwhelming common sense," he said. "Too many things are being put online."

Some cloud computing moves are "ill-advised," he added.

More industrial control systems are becoming connected to the Internet, said Richard Power, director of strategic communications at CyLab at Carnegie Mellon. "Everything's running on off-the-shelf software," he said. The electrical grid's growing connection to the Internet "has moved forward for performance, it's moved forward for convenience. It's moved forward in many different ways, but not in terms of security."

Now is the time for a YMCA in Mount Pleasant, according to Tom Earnhardt, a 28-year veteran physician?s assistant and Mt. Pleasant native who is Chief Operating Officer of Cabarrus Family Medicine.? He and others are trying to raise money and meeting with YMCA officials to try to establish a YMCA in Mt. Pleasant.?

Earnhardt sees patients regularly at the CFM?s Mt. Pleasant office.? One of the medical conditions Earnhardt treats there most often is arthritis ? years of farming and hard labor have wreaked havoc on many of Mount Pleasant?s residents. Access to a warm water pool could be a tremendous help, he said. ?Warm water exercise is a great form of treatment. It builds muscle strength, relaxes stiff joints and provides pain relief.?

And that?s just one of the ways a YMCA could benefit the community. Fighting childhood obesity, providing a safe place for teens to gather, offering exercise classes and other programs that enhance family and community living are a few more, he said.

Three years ago, Earnhardt undertook a campaign to establish a YMCA in Mount Pleasant. The Cannon Memorial YMCA board gave half the money for a study to see if there would be enough membership support for a Y in Mount Pleasant, and Earnhardt paid the rest out of his own pocket.??

?I felt it was so important to get the project off the ground, that I was happy to pay for half the study costs,? he said.

But he wasn?t pleased with the results. The study determined through a narrow look at the U.S. 49 and the N.C. 73 corridors that there wasn?t enough population to support a Y, Earnhardt said. But he believes that if the study had taken in a broader swath of Cabarrus County and the outlying areas into Stanly County, like Locust and Oakboro, it would have proven to be a well-supported YMCA.

The Cannon Memorial YMCA nixed the idea of a Mount Pleasant YMCA, telling Earnhardt, ?It?s a great idea, but not now.?

Earnhardt said he thinks the time has come to proceed with a health and fitness center in Mount Pleasant, whether it?s through the YMCA or another non-profit agency. He has established a board of directors for what he has named The Eastern Cabarrus Health and Recreation Center, and has appealed to the board of directors of the Cannon Memorial YMCA once again.

He said he?s not asking for money, just support through the use of the YMCA franchised name to begin fund-raising efforts. If the project doesn?t go through, the money raised will still go to the Cannon Memorial YMCA, he said. But he says he?s discouraged again because he?s been told the board is likely to return another ?not now? decision.

Earnhardt said he?s ready for a health and fitness center in Mount Pleasant, and he believes the town?s residents and people in outlying areas are too. Another option is to start filing for non-profit status and create a stand-alone health and fitness center with no YMCA connection.

But Earnhardt said he feels the Cannon Memorial YMCA brand would be ideal for Mount Pleasant.

?There are three Cannon Memorial YMCAs in the county ? one in Kannapolis, one in Concord serving West Cabarrus, and one in Harrisburg. It just makes sense for the eastern part of Cabarrus County ?to be represented with a YMCA.?

According to Earnhardt, ?There is a huge disparity of exercise facilities in Cabarrus County. With obesity on a steep upward slope, we need to take our health and well-being seriously.? ?He further quoted a report by The Clinton Foundation which states that over the past four decades, obesity rates have soared among children of all age groups, increasing nearly five-fold among those ages 6-11 and that today, nearly 25 million children are overweight or obese.? The report also states that if the obesity rates among children continues to increase, our current generation of children will become the first in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.?

??I am hopeful the Cannon Memorial YMCA will see the value and importance of establishing a facility in Eastern Cabarrus County.? I realize it will be a challenge but so are most worthwhile projects.? Adequate exercise facilities should be available to all residents of Cabarrus County and this project would go a long way in meeting that need.?
