Verizon Vacation Blackout Aligns With iPhone 5 Launch Rumors

iPhone 5 mystery 275

The expected iPhone 5 launch next month will not only tax the resources of Apple but its carrier partners as well. According to new report from TechCrunch, vacation blackouts imposed by Verizon Wireless are in line with rumors about a Sept. 21 iPhone 5 launch.

Citing a trusted Verizon employee, TechCrunch said Verizon employees are banned from taking vacation time between Sept. 21 and Sept. 30.

Last week, meanwhile, BGR said an AT&T training event was moved to the first week in October so it wouldn't conflict with a "huge announcement."

Those reports are in line with rumors that Apple will hold a press event on Sept. 12 to unveil the next-gen iPhone (and possibly an iPad mini), and launch the device on Sept. 21.

Apple has not made any announcements. The iPhone 4S made its debut during an Oct. 4 press event and hit stores on Oct. 14.

The iPhone 5, meanwhile, is expected to include a larger, 4-inch screen and 4G LTE connectivity, among other things. For more, see PCMag's iPhone 5 rumor roundup slideshow below.

Update: A Verizon Wireless spokeswoman pointed PCMag to a Techno Buffalo story that said a Verizon worker denied reports of a Sept. 21 vacation blackout.

How Much Do Most Kids Get For Allowance?

In 2012, it pays to be a kid.

The average allowance provides kids enough money in a year to be able to buy an Apple iPad and three Kindles and still have money left over, according to a national survey sponsored by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA).? While allowance amounts vary by age, the average allowance totals $65 a month, or $780 a year.

The vast majority of parents do require their children to earn their allowance. Eighty-nine percent of parents expect their children to work at least one hour a week and, on average, children put in 6.2 hours per week on chores. Nearly half the parents with kids in school (48 percent) also pay for good grades ? the average going price for an A is $16.60.

[Americans Admit Their Most Foolish Financial Mistakes]

Children have broad flexibility in how they spend the money they receive. They most often use their allowances to buy toys or to hang out with friends, according to the survey, as parents handle other purchases. In fact, parents who pay an allowance are significantly more likely to also pay for discretionary items such as sport- and hobby-related expenses, mobile phone service, movie rentals and digital downloads.

"These findings make clear that it can pay to be a kid," said Jordan Amin, CPA, chair of the AICPA?s National CPA Financial Literacy Commission. "Parents need to make sure they?re also passing along financial sense with those dollars and cents. Earning, budgeting and saving are all important lessons that can be tied to allowances ? lessons that can help put children on solid financial footing."

Mattel Launches iPad-connected Apptivity Range of Toys

Toy manufacturer Mattel has launched Apptivity, a range of interactive screen-safe toys and apps for the iPad.

First, customers buy one of the Apptivity toys, which draw on Mattel's toy brands and licenses including Hot Wheels, Fisher Price, WWE, and Batman.

Next, they?download the corresponding free app - which add popular games Cut the Rope and Fruit Ninja, and their own accompanying toys,?into the mix - and then play by touching the toys to the Tablet's screen.

"With millions of households now owning iPads, we sought out a meaningful way to create new play possibilities that both entertain and bring families together," says Lisa McKnight, SVP of marketing for Mattel's North America division. "Apptivity meets the needs of today's tech-savvy kids, while showcasing our trusted brands and best-in-class partners."

The range of toys is currently being promoted with a giant iPad at London's Westfield shopping centre, which is big enough to be played with by standing on it.

Fashion Orders Startup Miinto Secures $6M Series A Round From Dawn Capital

Screen Shot 2012-08-21 at 10.46.51JustEat and businesses like it, such as Delivery Hero, have proved that you can accelerate the adoption of online amongst local restaurants by solving their ordering problems. But it appears the same can be done with other niches. Thus Miinto is doing for ?bricks and mortar? fashion boutiques what the likes of JustEat does for restaurants: it gets them online quickly, cheaply and efficiently. Indeed, there is more than a passing comparison since Miinto's team and investors are heavily drawn from the Just Eat alumni. That combination has, claims Miinto, led to substantial growth, which has in turn led to the startup securing a $6m in Series A investment from Dawn Capital out of London.

More cases of syphilis in porn found by LA inquiry

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Four more cases of syphilis have been found in an investigation of an outbreak among porn performers, bringing the total to nine, and the discovery of more cases is likely, Los Angeles County's top health official said Tuesday.

Five cases were reported last week, causing a trade group for the multi-billion dollar industry to call for a halt in filming to prevent the spread of disease.

"It's not surprising in the adult film industry that we would have transmission of all sexually transmitted diseases because they're having unprotected sex, oftentimes with multiple actors," said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The current number of syphilis cases in the most recent outbreak "will grow," said Fielding, adding that an ongoing investigation is expected to uncover more cases. The latest discoveries were made through testing of the sexual partners of the earlier cases found, he said.

All those infected are also in the industry, but it remains unclear whether they contracted the illness on- or off-set, he said.

The Free Speech Coalition called for a nationwide filming moratorium this weekend, telling performers to get tested for syphilis and to get penicillin shots before returning to sets. After performers get the shots, they can go back to work within 10 days, said FSC spokeswoman Joanne Cachapero.

Last year, 819 cases of syphilis were reported throughout Los Angeles County, said Fielding. While the number of cases in the porn community may seem small by comparison, Fielding said, "I doubt that the rate of sexually transmitted disease is higher anywhere else."

Fielding said the county health department is alerting providers that work frequently with porn performers, which are largely located in the San Fernando Valley, to be on the lookout for an increase in syphilis cases.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, syphilis is transmitted through direct contact with syphilis sores, which mainly occur on the external genitals, vagina, anus or inside the rectum.

A single shot of penicillin can cure a person who has had syphilis for less than a year, according to the CDC. Additional doses are necessary for people who have had the STD for a longer period.

The current self-imposed moratorium on porn shoots isn't the first time the industry has stepped in following news of ill performers.

In 2011, major porn producers stopped filming for nearly a week after an adult film performer tested positive for HIV, which causes AIDS. The Free Speech Coalition said the case was later determined to have been a false report.

In 2010, porn actor Derrick Burts was diagnosed as HIV-positive, and his case was confirmed, briefly halting production.

In 2004, at least five performers tested positive for HIV, prompting another brief self-imposed moratorium.

Vancouver's Remarkable Price:Rent Fundamentals ? ?About to sign ...

?About to sign lease on 1 year new house built by Asian owner, 1800+ sf, pulled off MLS recently due to no buyer. Now about to be rented to yours truly at ~35 years Price-to-Rent ratio after talking down rent by $100/m. [Thus 420 monthlyrent:price ratio. -ed.]Landlord still has a couple houses near completion. Who knows what happens to the tenant if the landlord goes bankrupt???
?I?m moving from a 1Br+den 670 sq ft condo at 283 months (23.6 years) rent, to (the aforementioned) 3Br newer house at 415 months (34.6 years) rent. Definitely makes more financial sense to rent than buy. Viewed a 3Br 1000sq ft newer condo few days ago at 305 months (25.4 years) rent, but passed (interesting to note that property manager is a realtor, guess managing client?s property might be what?s keeping them busy these days!)
- VMD at VCI 17 Aug 2012 10:00pm and 18 Aug 2012 11:22am

An example of a ?speculative hold?. The owner believes prices will rise in future and is holding the property not for rental yield, but for assumed future price increases.
We are of the opinion that a good percentage of this kind of inventory will be put on the market at significantly lower prices, as it becomes clear that a downward trajectory for prices is establishing itself.
And, yes, this will be disruptive to tenants. The rental market is less stable through a speculative mania in housing, and the unwinding thereof.

Other current sky-high Price:Rent ratio anecdotes from the same VCI thread:

?I am living in Richmond with an (assessed value) : (rent) ratio of about 285.
Strata fees and property taxes not included, why buy now??

- Anonymous 18 Aug 2012 10:04am

?I?m renting a house in SE Burnaby. Price to rent is somewhere between 350-370 on the conservative side. My best friend is the landlord and I?ve urged him to consider selling. But he will have nothing to do with it. Already has over $1.5mil RE exposure with little other savings. Oh yeah, still looking to buy another investment property because ?RE does so much better than the stock market?. Just can?t save people from themselves.?
- How much?? 18 Aug 2012 10:27am

?Here is a unit that has been listed on CL for months (available now) for $2650 per month. The same units are listed for sale at $839K to $879K. So even if they get their asking rent the PR is 316 plus.?
- Anonymous 18 Aug 2012 12:36pm

?Beat you all. 4br house on Ontario. 2012 sale $1.35M. Monthly rent $2850, 2 yr lease. Price/rent 474. I love living here but wouldn?t buy at half the price.?
?Our landlord purchased the property earlier this year as an ?investment?. I really can?t understand their business model. The house is an original, nicely-maintained bungalow. New paint, new dishwasher etc.
It?s not a quick flip (we have a 2-year lease) and it?s not a tear down and rebuild, which might make sense. The landlord is shelling out $3k or whatever per month to hold the property. They seem to be invested for the long term.
Of course the potential downside for us is a forced move if the house is sold. We figured that by the end of our lease the house will likely be underwater so that the landlord would not be in a position to sell. We will see how that goes.
I should add the landlord couple are very nice people and I don?t wish them any financial hardship.?

- No Money Down 18 Aug 2012 12:37pm and 19 Aug 2012 10:10am

?I have a whole house (unlike many, home owners, I have no tenants in the basement to worry about) on a nice street off The Drive, assessed at a little over 410 months? rent.?
- N 18 Aug 2012 1:56pm

?I?m in a 3 bedroom house (we have the place to ourselves), 5 year lease for $1600/mo. House is worth $750,000 based on comps for a ratio of 468.?
- Vulture Fun 18 Aug 2012 11:34pm

?I pay $850 a month for a condo in Surrey. Same unit 2 floors up sold for $253,000 in late 2011. So a ratio of 297:1. You guys are insane with your 400?s ratios.?
- ScubaSteve 19 Aug 2012 12:39am

?I am the winner. I pay 4,400 for a 3,800 ft 6 bedroom (or is it 7?) house in west side.
Assessed close to $3.0 million. For now this is a 660 multiplier.
At the higher price points, it gets more and more un-economic to own and rent these houses out.?

- Van Coffee 19 Aug 2012 8:48am

?I?m at 489 but if I take off the huge strata fees that my landlord pays I go to 696. Strata and ppty tax eat up exactly 50% of my rent cheque. Not a lot left to pay the mortgage and occasional special assessment.
BTW?for all you haters who think we renters are basement dwellers who are broke, I?m writing this poolside in Osoyooss. Thanks landlord!?

- McLovin 19 Aug 2012 11:01am

?For the record ? we are in a $1.5M Condo. Strata and taxes are over 1,000 per month and the rent is 3,500 gross (2,500 net of landlord costs). This give you 600.
Property value is no more than the day we moved in.
This represents a $200,000 plus savings and building of equity by renting (we built equity by renting ? ? ? sounds strange).?
