Automatically Send Starred Google Reader Articles to Pocket or Instapaper

Automatically Send Starred Google Reader Articles to Pocket or InstapaperBookmark and Read Later apps like Pocket, Instapaper, and Readability are awesome ways to store and catch up on the interesting articles you find online, but if you use Google Reader, saving those articles is a multi-step process. Here's an IFTTT recipe that will send articles to your favorite service in one keystroke.

IFTTT, our favorite webapp-automating service, has actions for Pocket, Instapaper, and Readability built-in. All you need to do is create a recipe (like this one from user masemase) that adds an item to Pocket, Instapaper, or Readability whenever you star it in Google Reader. That way, as you're flying through your RSS feeds, you can star anything that looks interesting and check it out in your favorite app later on.

Sqord Introduces Technology Solution To Fight Child Obesity | Your ...

As mentioned in the past, sometimes I get press releases emailed to me about great things happening in the health and fitness industry, so I wanted to share this with my readers. Please feel free to send any press releases along using the contact form above.

Sqord is addressing the critical problem of child obesity and sedentary lifestyles in youth by making healthy, active play more fun for kids.

The Durham, NC based company wants to help kids lead healthier, more active lives, by tapping into their interests, namely: having fun, playing games, and using social media.

?Our goal is to get kids off the couch,? said Sqord CEO and co-founder Coleman Greene, ?We do that with a proprietary blend of hardware and software that?s one part game platform, one part social media, and one part activity tracker?a wrist-worn device we call the Sqord PowerBand.?

Kids simply put on their Sqord PowerBands (Greene vouches for its kid-proof indestructibility), and go about their daily routines as the PowerBand records duration and intensity of activities via its state-of-the-art 3-axis accelerometer. The system also includes a small SyncStation, where a kid simply taps his PowerBand to send activity data to Sqord Online. It?s there, on Sqord?s engaging and motivating social media website, where activity data translates into points, wins and virtual rewards.

The website allows kids to check out what their friends have been up to, send high fives (the equivalent of a Facebook ?like?), and ?squawks? (similar to posting on someone?s Facebook wall), and to set challenges to compete in with their friends.

?We?re translating physical activity into the kind of online challenges and competitions that kids are very familiar and comfortable with because of social media,? explained Greene. ?Their goals might be to score the most points, win medals and brag to their friends, but ours is to make physical activity more fun for kids so they will want to make it part of their day.?

The company?s concept has generated considerable early interest and attention from several impressive state and national organizations. In June, the company won the $50,000 Active Schools Acceleration Project (ASAP) Technology Innovation Grand Prize. ASAP is an initiative of ChildObesity180, a cross-sector organization committed to reversing the trend of childhood obesity in one generation. The competition launched in February with a video message from First Lady Michelle Obama encouraging participation.

Since then, Sqord has received an additional $20,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to continue development of its device and web platform, has piloted its system with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA, and has enlisted schools districts in Colorado, Miami-Dade, and Seattle as paying customers.

After a taste of success in fundraising, Greene, Sqord co-founder Vish Avasarala, and Jeff Wright, Vice President of User Experience and Design, opted for another funding strategy using the new social media-friendly phenomena called crowdfunding. Crowdfunding, websites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter enable companies, causes, projects or individuals to make direct funding pitches to the public. With a simple mouse click, ordinary people can contribute a few dollars to a crowdfunding campaign. The process allows entrepreneurs to offer perks like discounted or limited edition product to early supporters.
Sqord launched its crowdfunding campaign on Dec. 1, and Greene hopes to raise as much as $85,000 by the time it wraps up on Jan. 5. The company will use the revenue to bring the Sqord system to seven new sites and 15,000 new users.

?We want to keep our momentum going, reach a larger audience and scale up our pilot programs,? said Greene. ?Whether crowdfunding will be a successful method of bringing in additional revenue remains to be seen, but we figured we had nothing to lose by giving it a try and seeing how many people we could reach with the platform.?

?We hope to reach out to families, organizations that serve youth, and anyone with kids in their lives, and bring them on the bandwagon,? Greene continued, ?With just a little support, we have a huge opportunity to make a positive change in kids? lives, and let them have a lot of fun in the process.?

Google India helps Delhi's iconic Chandni Chowk market go online ...

New Delhi: Over 2,500 businesses in the capital's iconic Chandni Chowk market are now online with their own websites as part of an initiative by Google, owner of the world's most popular search engine.

Google, as part of its 'India Get Your Business Online' initiative launched in November 2011, offers free websites and domains to small and medium businesses (SMBs) in the country.

"With over 137 million Internet users in the country, an increasing number of users are now looking for local information online," Google India VP and Managing Director (Sales and Operations) Rajan Anandan said at an event.

An initiative like this helps SMBs get started on the Internet, he added.

"There are 47 million SMBs in the country, but only 4,00,000 have a web presence. Of this, only 1,00,000 have a decent quality web presence," Anandan said.

As part of the project, Google India and HostGator went to each shop in Chandni Chowk and built over 2,500 free websites for businesses operating from the market.

In addition to creating these websites, Google India has also launched a common website www.chandnichowknowonline.in to provide a directory of businesses from Chandni Chowk.

Communications and IT Minister Kapil Sibal, who is also a Member of Parliament from the Chandni Chowk constituency, said the move will help these shop owners increase their business as information about them would be more widely available.

"Internet is becoming an engine of economic growth and is expected to contribute over USD 100 billion by 2015 to India's GDP. Embracing Internet will increase competitiveness of these businesses in the global economy," Sibal said.

Google aims to build over 500,000 free websites for SMBs in the country by 2014. "We have created over 150,000 websites across 7,850 cities in India within a year. Next year, we expect to cover 300,000 businesses and by 2014-end, we will meet the target of 500,000," Anandan said.

He added the company is looking at some other major business hubs to take more small businesses online but did not disclose any details.

Chandni Chowk is a hub of small and medium businesses in north India with over 5,000 businesses including suppliers, exporters and wholesalers, but very few own a website.

"This initiative from Google has provided all businesses with a professional website, which will now make it easier for customers to find us online and help us to grow our businesses," Kinari Bazaar Gota Zari Association of Chandni Chowk spokesperson Pradeep Jain said.

Under the 'India Get Your Business Online' initiative, small businesses can set up a website for free and after a year, they need to pay just the website hosting charges. Google runs similar initiatives in other parts of the world as well.

Israel's Lieberman says turns focus to election campaign

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Avigdor Lieberman formally tendered his resignation as Israel's foreign minister on Sunday and said he would focus on campaigning for next month's election on a joint ticket with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Although Netanyahu's rightist party alliance is expected to easily win the January 22 ballot, an opinion poll showed a dip in electoral support after Israeli prosecutors said on Thursday they would charge Lieberman with breach of trust.

Lieberman denies any wrongdoing in the case, which involved an Israeli diplomat who was promoted after leaking information to him about a police investigation into his activities.

He told reporters on Sunday he hopes for a quick trial and acquittal that would allow his return to high office.

"I am parting temporarily," Lieberman said. "The advantage is that it will leave me more time for activity ahead of the election. I intend to increase my involvement in electioneering, and I have no doubt what the outcome will be."

Lieberman heads the far-right Israel Beiteinu party, which is running jointly with Netanyahu's conservative Likud. Lieberman is number two on the slate, dubbed Likud Beiteinu.

A poll on the Israeli news site Walla on Friday predicted Likud Beiteinu would take 35 of parliament's 120 seats, down from 38 a day earlier.

Lieberman, a tough-talking immigrant from the former Soviet Union, said he wanted to prove his innocence in court. It is highly unlikely a trial could be concluded in the time left before the election and the formation of the next government, and some commentators have said he might seek a plea bargain.

Speaking on Sunday, Lieberman did not rule that out. "I very, very much hope this process will be a quick," he said.

Israel's Justice Ministry would not comment on the likely scheduling of Lieberman's case and the possibility of a plea bargain. But ministry spokesman Moshe Cohen said prosecutors would not object to speeding up proceedings, if that were requested by Lieberman.

Lieberman's resignation takes effect on Tuesday, after which the foreign portfolio will be assumed by Netanyahu, who has often sidelined Lieberman when it came to key relationships involving Washington and other Western allies.
