LOS ANGELES -- Swizz Beatz has been to the big show before. The sought-after producer/rapper hit the VMA stage last year to join Drake and Mary J. Blige for a memorable performance of "Fancy," and on Sunday, he's amped to watch Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and Pitbull do their thing.

Beatz spoke to MTV News just hours before taking the stage at the Taco Bell Feed the Beat MTV2 VMA concert on Friday (August 26) at the Music Box in Los Angeles on a bill featuring Chiddy Bang and Wallpaper, and he offered some advice to Weezy and Pitbull about making VMA headlines.

"The big stage is a different stage. I think it's an opportunity to bring out even more of the creative," he said of the need to bring a different level of game for the VMA broadcast. "Because when you're on that big stage, you know the whole world is watching you, and people can really see your true talent and your craftsmanship."

He also recalled looking out on the crowd of his peers last year and remembering that it was all just a haze. "Honestly, when I'm onstage, I can't really see the crowd," he said. "The lights and everything shining in your face, it's like a blur and you're in your zone ... [but] you can feel the crowd and your motivation is to stay focused and know that that tape is rolling and you better not mess up now, because it's live."

After VMA performer Chris Brown jumped onstage during one of Swizzy's recent Las Vegas events to unveil the new Beatz tune "Dance Like a White Girl," the producer said the reaction was "pandemonium." That's why he's excited about Brown's VMA slot, warning, "Everybody, get ready. Y'all better get ready."

Brown's choreographers, Rich and Tone, seconded that emotion, telling MTV News that we will see Chris in "1,000 percent mode." Even with his table-hopping 2007 performance still on people's minds, the pair said Sunday night could be on a whole other level. "We've been working with Chris for many years; I've never seen him this way on this performance ever," Tone said. "He's pulling out all his tricks on this one. He's definitely gonna show you something fresh and new; something he has never done before."

Although The Guard is primarily a language romp, it's also a terrific showcase for veteran pug-faced character actor Brendan Gleeson.

Brendan Gleeson is a blooming marvel.

A laugh-out-loud comedy as hard as "The French Connection," a modern spaghetti Western on the windswept wastes of Ireland.

Crisp, acid-tongued and sharply acted, it's the sort of exercise in tangy Celtic cynicism that's become one of the Emerald Isle's most reliable imports.

There are few things finer in cinema than Brendan Gleeson's fat, happy face.

McDonagh's script is agile, darting between the ridiculous, the sage and the surprisingly sentimental. His love of language and the absurd has hints of the wisecracking Quentin Tarantino. But the story is decidedly more rooted in Ireland's loamy turf.

If you like your cops and robbers stories laced with Irish humour, you'll want to see The Guard, a film that blends crime and blarney in equal measure.

The film is foul-mouthed and not without its flourishes of violence but it's irresistibly likeable (and unpredictable).

Boyle is probably the first screen hero in a long time whose heroism comes out of boredom and ennui. He gives nihilism a good name.

Augmenting a smart, witty screenplay is magnificent Scope camerawork by Larry Smith, using beautiful locations around the west coast of Ireland.

A shifty, cunning and gloriously off-kilter affair.

It's a good thing the two main characters are played by actors who can make these shifts in tone work otherwise this could have been one big mess

Driven by pitch-perfect performances and a darkly humoured script, this ends up an hysterically funny and immensely enjoyable romp.

Delightfully dark, The Guard is the latest buddy comedy classic, and a must-see for fans of Hot Fuzz and In Bruges.

The film falters when it gets into the somber philosophising that was done so much better in [Martin McDonough's] In Bruges. Still, that movie was primarily a drama, and this one is absolutely a comedy. One of the funniest of the year, no question.

Gleeson is perhaps the only true reason to sit through The Guard, a satisfactory yet oddly monotonous police adventure in dire need of the actor's perfectly timed delivery.

The Guard is certainly good for a laugh or two, but those that are claiming it to be funnier than In Bruges are claiming things that aren't true.

Gleeson's Boyle constantly wrong-foots those around him. He has no time for political correctness, yet it's his mealy-mouthed PC-Plod colleagues who are the real racists ... McDonagh's film shares his jaunty irreverance.

Great fun when taken in the right spirit, which would be Old Paddy with a Guinness chaser.

We are never in doubt that it's a comedy, but there are some fairly serious matters and a surprising amount of dramatic action

It is the characterisations and their actions that catch us off guard in this nicely written and played film whose genres blend as comfortably as the characters

MINNEAPOLIS ? Dallas Cowboys center Andre Gurode's future with the team is up in the air.

Gurode was on the inactive list Saturday night for Dallas' preseason game at Minnesota, despite the five-time Pro Bowl pick being healthy during training camp and a knee injury to backup Phil Costa. Third-stringer Kevin Kowalski started at center instead.

Costa has been pushing Gurode for the job this month.

Owner Jerry Jones said before the game on the team's pregame TV show that Gurode's status on the roster is under scrutiny for salary-cap reasons. Coach Jason Garrett said on the show that the Cowboys would evaluate Gurode's situation Sunday.

Infrared satellite spies dim brown dwarf stars right in our galactic backyard

When you think of stars, you probably imagine massive, burning balls of fire much like our sun, but there are stars out there in?space which you could actually stand on and not be burnt to a crisp.?NASA has known of these celestial bodies ? called brown Y dwarf stars ? for a great long time. But now, a satellite has spotted a particularly chill Y dwarf that holds the new record for the coolest star at just 80 degree Fahrenheit.

Prior to the discovery, the coolest Y dwarfs on record wouldn't instantly incinerate a human explorer, but that unlucky individual would be uncomfortably warm. The new cold star record holder put out just enough infrared light to be spotted by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite, and is an order of magnitude cooler than any before it. WISE also spotted roughly 100 other brown dwarfs ? a handful of which are considerably closer than NASA had thought.

Brown dwarf stars of sometimes referred to as "failed stars" because their comparatively low mass keeps them from being able to fuse atoms like our own sun.?The lack of bright visible light makes these cool stars difficult to spot, even with the assistance of telescopes, and infrared sensors are sometimes the only way to learn of their existence. Researchers were surprised to learn that several were within 40 light years of our own solar system, just a stone's throw in terms of our galaxy.

KABUL, Afghanistan ? A police official and eyewitnesses say the death toll from twin suicide attacks on a British compound in Kabul and an ensuing gunbattle between insurgents and security troops has climbed to at least 10 people.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi says at least two policemen were also wounded in the attack, which came as Afghans mark Independence Day from Britain in 1919.

Sediqqi says one suicide bomber first detonated a car laden with explosives outside the British Council in the western part of Kabul on Friday morning.

A second bomber penetrated inside the complex and set off an explosives vest. The blasts set off a five-hour-long gunbattle between Afghan security forces and an unknown number of insurgents inside the compound.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Two suicide bombers attacked a British compound in the Afghan capital on Friday, killing at least three people and wounding two, police and eyewitnesses said. The attack was followed by sporadic gunfire exchanges several hours after the blasts.

The explosions started with one bomber detonating an explosives-laden car outside the British Council while another suicide bomber struck inside the compound, according to Afghan police.

Afghan security forces dispatched to the scene later said they were exchanging sporadic gunfire with at least one other insurgent who got into the compound. The stand-off was still going on four hours after the initial blasts.

British authorities would not say whether any of their personnel were inside the building at the time of the attack.

A spokesman for the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The twin blasts occurred in the early hours of Afghan Independence Day, marking Afghanistan's full independence from Britain in 1919. It was unclear whether the attack was related to the anniversary.

Kabul police official Farooq Asas said a suicide bomber first detonated a car laden with explosives outside the compound. At least one insurgent attacked the compound on foot, Asas said.

Two Afghan policemen and a municipal worker were killed, he said.

The explosions shattered glass windows a third of a mile (half a kilometer) from the site.

Afghan troops at the scene around the British Council early Friday morning were making preparations to assault the compound. NATO troops were also there in an advisory role.

The walled compound of the British Council is located in an upscale residential area in west Kabul. It consists of two buildings, one is a two-story building and the is other a single-story structure. The Council focuses on aiding foreign nations with education and building civil society.

Friday's fighting damaged two neighboring high schools and several auto repair and auto parts shops nearby.

While violence continues to rage in many parts of Afghanistan, attacks in the capital are relatively uncommon. In June, 21 people were killed at a Kabul hotel, including nine insurgents, with militants fighting NATO and Afghan troops for five hours with rocket-propelled grenades and suicide bombs.

In a comment to my last book review, lattejust4me said she had similar problems with The Seraph Seal and ?thought I wasn?t smart enough to get it.? My reply grew to four paragraphs before I edited it, so I realized it needed to be a blog post.

When a piece of writing confuses us, should we feel we?re at fault? I say no. Either the work in question is poorly written/edited, or we?re not the intended audience.

My journalism and technical writing professors both gave some good advice on this subject:

From my journalism professor: Short paragraphs, short sentences, use English words instead of foreign ones (this is for an English-speaking readership, of course), and write to the audience?s reading level.

From my technical writing professor, the 11th Commandment: Know thy audience.

Now, my journalism professor was speaking specifically of writing for newspapers, and he was dispensing these bits of wisdom in the 1980s, when the average U.S. reading level was at 8th grade. His point was that just because you can write long, Jane Austen-like paragraphs and sentences, and just because you might be a walking reference library, that doesn?t mean you should brain dump all your knowledge into your articles.

(And yes, I see the irony in that last paragraph, but I can?t figure out how to break it down any further other than using commas.)

My technical writing professor?s advice was about both format and content. She often told us we shouldn?t write at our audience, but to it. Don?t present a poem at a business meeting or a quarterly financial report at a poetry reading.

So, to sum up: if we don?t get what we?re reading, it?s not our fault. If our readers don?t get what they?re reading, it is our fault.
