Wieber halfway to London after 1st day of trials

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Jordyn Wieber usually doesn't worry too much about rankings.

This is one meet, however, where she really, really wants to finish first.

The reigning world champion is halfway to the London Games after breezing through the first night of the Olympic trials Friday. The winner of the two-day trials gets the lone automatic spot on the five-woman team, and Wieber has the lead over Gabby Douglas after turning in the only clean performance of the night.

"It would be a huge honor to take that top spot," Wieber said. "I try not to think about standings, but at the same time, everyone wants that guaranteed spot.

Wieber scored 15.05 or better on every event and finished with 61.7 points. She goes into Sunday night's competition with a 0.3-point lead over Douglas, who had to work out of a hole after making a big error on uneven bars, her first event.

"I do want it very badly but I'm trying not to think about first," Douglas said. "I need to think about polishing up my skills."

She's not the only one.

Aly Raisman, normally rock steady, finished a distant third at 60.3 after a big wobble on balance beam and going out of bounds on floor exercise, where she is the reigning world bronze medalist. Kyla Ross landed her vault on her backside. McKayla Maroney fell off both uneven bars and balance beam.

And it was another rough night for reigning Olympic champion Nastia Liukin.

Liukin knows she needs to put up huge scores on uneven bars to have any shot at the team, and has yet to do it. Clearly out of gas near the end of her routine, she stalled on a handstand on the upper bar and, as the crowd groaned, her legs folded over. She managed to stay on, but it cost whatever momentum she had left. She didn't get anywhere near the height she needed for her dismount, plopping onto the mat.

Her score of 14.05 was good enough only for 10th on bars.

"Of course any athlete will tell you when they don't have a great performance, especially when it's at Olympic trials, it's disappointing," Liukin said. "But at the same time you have to come back out there and (show) that you are a fighter and you're not just going to give up."

Wieber is the favorite for the all-around title in London, having won all but one ? yes, one ? all-around competition since 2008. But she has to get there first, and she started piling up the points from the minute she stepped on the floor. She showed big improvements on uneven bars, where she's had some trouble recently. She was so smooth and controlled she appeared to float as she moved between the bars, and there was a breezy confidence to her release move.

She landed her upgraded dismount with such ease it was as if she'd been doing it for years, the only movement coming from coach John Geddert, who hopped across the floor pumping his fists in celebration.

While balance beam tripped up Raisman and Ross, Wieber may as well have been in a parking lot for as easily as she made her tricks look on the 4-inch wide slab that's 4 feet off the ground. She landed one of her aerial skills on one foot, slowly sweeping the other along the side of the beam. Just watching her twisting back somersault is enough to make you dizzy, but she landed it perfectly and moved right onto her next trick.

She ended her night with a rousing floor routine that may as well have been a victory lap. Floor is the one event the stoic Wieber lets her personality show, and she was even sassier than normal as she strutted and pranced through her dance moves. She stuck the landings of her tumbling runs so emphatically you could hear it throughout the arena.

"I just loved the way she went out and attacked it," Geddert said. "She had some issues so there's room for improvement and it's my job to point that out. I don't think we've ever had a meet where I didn't say, 'There are things to improve.' We're still waiting for the perfect meet."

Douglas has emerged as Wieber's biggest rival, reminiscent of the battle between Liukin and Shawn Johnson four years ago. But she couldn't overcome a mistake on her very first event.

Going up last on uneven bars, she lost her rhythm midway through the routine and stalled on a pirouette. She stayed motionless for several seconds, gripping the bar tightly with her hands and using every bit of muscle she had not to fall off.

"Man, I was using every single muscle," Douglas said. "I just pulled it out of nowhere. That was God. And someone blowing (at) me from the stands."

She hung on somehow and completed the rest of her routine, but her 15.250 was well below her usual score. She also had a big wobble on balance beam.

But Douglas rallied on floor exercise, posting the second-best score of the night with a routine that was worth every penny of the fans' ticket.

Turn on Douglas' bouncy techno music and it's like turning on a light. Make that a spotlight that could power a small city, actually. Unlike many gymnasts, whose could use Muzak for as much as they acknowledge their music, Douglas glands her tumbling runs right on the biggest beats, giving them both extra oomph. And the air she gets on uneven bars? She's got some pretty mean hops on floor, too, looking like a rubber ball as she bounced from one landing into her next skill.

She finished with the third-best vault of the night. But it wasn't enough to leapfrog Wieber.

"It's not her goal to beat anybody," Geddert said. "But she's a competitor. When there's a tight race, she steps up."

Texas A&M may face obstacles in law school purchase

John Sharp learned that Texas A&M wanted a law school around 1972, when he was 22 years old.

One of his first bosses, Bryan state Sen. William T. Moore, had been working toward the goal, but complained of interference from people like Frank Erwin, the politically connected chairman of the University of Texas System Board of Regents. The effort went nowhere.

Forty years later, Sharp is chancellor of his alma mater?s university system and spearheaded the effort for A&M to buy the Texas Wesleyan School of Law. A&M announced the purchase Tuesday, pending state approval. Now, Sharp hopes the state?s political landscape has shifted enough for him to achieve his old boss?s agenda.

Some signs point to Austin now being a friendlier place for that goal. There is an Aggie governor, Rick Perry, who has expressed public support for the idea. And the chairman of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Fred Heldenfels, is an Aggie donor.

But the purchase comes at a time when state money is tight and jobs are hard for attorneys to find. And Texas Senate Finance Committee Chairman Steve Ogden, R-Bryan, predicted that A&M?s $25 million purchase price may raise eyebrows, especially considering the fact that A&M committed millions more to lure a federal biosecurity research center to Bryan-College Station last week.

?A&M is sending out a conflicting message that they are going to have to work on in the Legislature because all we ever hear is how broke they are and how they are going to have to raise tuition to keep going, but yet every week there is a new announcement that they are going to spend tens of millions of dollars that in my opinion have very little to do with their core responsibility, which is to provide a world class education to 45,000 undergraduates,? he said. ?While they are out there empire-building, they are going to have a hard time explaining to the Legislature that they need more money.?

The Legislature has no role in approving or rejecting the law school proposal. That job is up to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which must sign off on any new degrees the university offers. Sharp said Tuesday that he likes A&M?s chances in getting that approval.

?The coordinating board leadership has been briefed on every single meeting we have had [about buying Texas Wesleyan],? he said Tuesday.

Heldenfels, who became coordinating board chairman in 2010, was out of town Wednesday and couldn?t be reached for comment. The board?s spokesman, Dominic Chavez, said it was too early in the process to say whether the program will be approved, or even what criteria will be considered during the process.

But Ogden noted that the Legislature will be needed to fund the school after it is approved. And he questioned whether that will happen since the state doesn?t seem to need new lawyers. A Wall Street Journal analysis published this week reported that 45 percent of 2011 law school graduates didn?t have a job within nine months of graduation.

?I don?t think the Legislature wants more lawyers,? he said. ?There is going to be some resistance in the Legislature for funding this.?

Sharp seemed prepared for that argument Tuesday.

?We are not interested in producing more lawyers,? he said. ?We are interested in producing more world-class lawyers.?

In a statement Wednesday, A&M System spokesman Steve Moore dismissed Ogden?s concerns.

?Chancellor Sharp and Senator Ogden are good friends and have great respect for each other, but lately have disagreed on most things with respect to A&M,? Moore said. ?Chancellor Sharp was an active proponent of the move to the SEC, the BARDA bio-defense program, RFPs leading to the Compass, USA agreement and the law school letter of intent. Senator Ogden expressed reservations about all these moves. In all of these cases, they agree to disagree.?

In other ways, A&M officials may see fewer obstacles to a law school than it has in the past.

A&M?s last effort to offer a law degree came in the 1990s, when it entered into a partnership with the South Texas College of Law in Houston. Under that arrangement, South Texas would have remained private, but its degrees would have had A&M?s name on it. A&M also would have gained influence over the law school?s curriculum and faculty hiring.

The Higher Education Coordinating Board blocked that plan, saying it was concerned that the state would eventually end up having to fund the school.

But A&M officials also perceived that politics were involved in the decision. Ray Bowen, who was A&M president at the time, said supporters of the University of Houston Law Center opposed the idea of an A&M incursion on the Houston legal community. The city already had two public law schools, Houston and Texas Southern.

?You have to support Houston?s wish to keep their territory,? Bowen said. ?You have three law schools within a rock?s throw.?

A partnership with Texas Wesleyan may be different, Bowen said, because there is no other law school in Fort Worth to compete. The University of North Texas does plan on opening a law school in Dallas in 2015, however.

State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, who has spearheaded the effort to start a North Texas law school, didn?t return a message seeking comment.

LGBT delegates leave Fire Brigades Union conference after voting rights removed

LGBT representatives left the Fire Brigades Union national conference in Blackpool after guaranteed voting rights for minority representatives across the union were removed by ballot.

The 44,000-member FBU voted to amend its equality structure late on the first day of the conference after a policy statement said the existing system, which guaranteed seats for LGBT, women and ethnic minority representatives on its national committee could ?distort democratic structures?.

Guaranteed representation for the minority groups, the document said, could ?increase the likelihood that a minority could outvote a majority?.

US: No sanctions on China, Singapore over Iran oil

By NBC News and news services

The United States on Thursday gave China and Singapore six-month reprieves from sanctions over importing Iranian oil.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton commended the two Asian countries for "significantly" reducing the oil purchases. Eighteen other governments have received similar waivers designed to pressure Iran to curb its nuclear program by choking off its oil revenues.

The West believes Iran aims to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran says its nuclear activities are solely for peaceful purposes such as generating electricity and medical isotopes.

Reductions by all 20 countries showed that Iran was paying a high price for its nuclear program, Clinton said.

"Their cumulative actions are a clear demonstration to Iran's government that Iran's continued violation of its international nuclear obligations carries an enormous economic cost," Clinton said in a statement.

?According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Iran's crude oil exports in 2011 were approximately 2.5 million barrels per day, and have dropped to roughly 1.5 million barrels per day, which in real terms means almost $8 billion in lost revenues every quarter,? she said. ?When the European Union oil embargo goes into effect July 1, Iran's leaders will understand even more fully the urgency of the choice they face and the unity of the international community.?

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is shown in Beijing on May 4.

Belgium, Britain, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, India, Malaysia, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Turkey earlier received waivers.

The latest waivers came as an American deadline arrived for banks to stop processing petroleum transactions with Tehran.

China buys up to a fifth of Iran's oil exports and Singapore buys Iranian fuel oil.

The Republican chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said the Obama administration was giving Beijing a "free pass."

"The administration likes to pat itself on the back for supposedly being strong on Iran sanctions," said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, of Florida. "But actions speak louder than words, and today the administration has granted a free pass to Iran's biggest enabler, China, which purchases more Iranian crude than any other country."

Technical talks over Iran?s nuclear program resume in Turkey next week.

Digifit iCardio Multi-Sport Heart Rate Monitor Training (for iPhone)

If you want real hard stats about your workouts, but accelerometers and GPS don't quite cut the mustard, buy yourself a heart rate monitor? and then get an app that can access the information and make some sense out of it. ?One option is the fitness iPhone app Digifit iCardio Multi-Sport Heart Rate Monitor Training (free to download, but additional fees required, details below), or just Digifit for short. At its most basic level, the app tracks your runs, bicycle rides, and other workouts and gives you good information about them, like distance, time, and pace. You can connect it to a heart rate monitoring strap, too, for much deeper health information, although the cost for all the components adds up.

Between the heart rate monitor (I used an ANT+ Garmin Heart Rate Monitor, about $25-$60), Digifit Connect device ($59.95), which plugs into the iPhone's base and enables the monitor to send information to the app, and $2.99 in-app purchase for heart rate monitoring support, the total cost is more than $75. Plus, if you want to add Fitness Assessments features, which let you create custom heart rate and pace zones, you'll have to shell out another $3.99.

The in-app purchase for heart-rate monitoring is the cost that stings, particularly if you've just spent $60 on the company's Digifit Connect, assuming (quite reasonably) that access to the data would be included.

Solid Core Metrics
The app itself works well?with or without the heart rate information, and, in my testing, the worst problem I encountered was that the heart rate strap and Digifit Connect lost contact with each other at least once every time I worked out. But when it does, the app continues to collect primary data. The timer still runs, the GPS map-plotting continues, and even calorie-burn estimations keep ticking. In other words, the app does a fine job holding up its end of the bargain, even when the other components fail. The Digifit app also chugs along just fine when the screen is locked, helping to minimize the battery drain (the GPS mapping feature will invariably, but unavoidably, tax the battery).

During a workout, the Digifit iPhone app can clue you into your own progress with voice announcements, vibrations, and push notifications. You can customize what kind of prompts you receive, if at all, and when. For example, you can set the Digifit to announce when you've hit your first mile, or to vibrate after 20 minutes, or to push a notification to the locked screen when your heart rate hits a certain number of beats per minute.

At the end of a workout, the app summarizes distance, pace, and other typical statistics you'd expect to find in a fitness tracking app.

The Digifit app has a wealth of customization options, settings, and features, crucial to a personal fitness app. You can set your height, weight, age, and sex in order for the app to better estimate calorie burn, as well as give accurate "zones" for your heart rate, like "warm-up zone." One thoughtful addition is a set of charts in which you can enter your resting heart rate, weight, blood pressure, and other personal metrics.

Digifit's Costs Add Up
The Digifit iCardio Multi-Sport Heart Rate Monitor Training app (for iPhone) provides a range of options for tracking your fitness, and it works pretty well, but the reasonably high cost for all the components makes this product more of a gadget pack than simple app. The price tag is close to, but slightly higher than with other gadget-app duos in this class, such as RunKeeper's Wearlink+ ($79.95) and Adidas' miCoach Connect Heart Rate Monitor ($70). The number of up-sells may cause you to steer clear of Digifit, but the app's performance is solid.?

10 ways tech can boost sales for SMBs

In the DIY culture of small businesses, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the options out there, and finding the time and money to dedicate to IT projects is not easy. All the same, IT is becoming an increasingly important aspect of being able to connect with customers and close sales. Here are 10 things you can do (some of which are pretty easy) that can help you use your IT resources to increase your revenues and profits.

1: Turn off the spam filters for sales accounts

Time and time again, I see businesses that have their accounts for inbound customer communications set up like personal accounts. Unless you make very little profit, the time needed to manually sift through spam is far less than the cost of lost sales, as important communications go astray. No spam filter is perfect, and lots of customers? emails somehow end up in the junk email bin or get deleted outright. If you are going to use a spam filter on these critical emails, use one that does not permanently block the emails.

2: Beware the coupon sites

Coupon sites are all the rage right now, but many small businesses have been burned by them. Not only are you giving a deep discount, but the terms are often tough for a small business to work with. Things like not being able to restrict the number of coupons sold, delayed payouts (to account for refunds), and the site?s fees often mean that the business takes a beating. If you come out of pocket on inventory or have other per-sale costs, you can lose your shirt in a hurry.

Even for businesses without a per-sale cost model, the deals can be damaging. For example, a local gun range owner reported to me that his deal for inexpensive lane time sold a lot of coupons, but the coupon customers all showed up right before the coupons expired, causing big lines for the full-price customers.

3: Always provide an incident or reference number

While no one is a big fan of automated replies of the ?Your email is important to us? variety, one valuable purpose they can serve is to provide a reference number for the incident or contact. Even if you do not use anything fancy for this, giving customers some sort of number to refer to is an important part of being able to follow up with them (or for them to follow up with you). It also helps ensure that when you talk to a customer, you both know what the call is in reference to.

4: Automatically notify customers as the status changes

The ?big boys? with their automated systems often get a few things right ? like status change notification emails. You need to be doing this, especially if your products are custom items. I?ve recently been dealing with a lot of vendors selling made-to-order or on-demand items, and a common theme is that communications are very poor. After a while, you wonder if you should just cancel your order and place one with a company that has the items in stock but not quite as customized.

Keep your customers in the loop and they?ll be less likely to start looking at other vendors and cancelling orders. Many e-commerce solutions offer this functionality, so it?s worth checking the documentation. If your system doesn?t offer such a feature, you should make a habit of sending emails manually.

5: Get a CRM

Customer relationship management (CRM) systems are typically associated with big businesses, and this has been the case for a while. CRM systems usually require a ton of maintenance and upkeep, and they have high costs and difficult installations. But a new breed of CRM vendors are changing the rules and offering CRM systems (usually Web-based, with zero install or IT department needed) that are targeted at the small business. A CRM system is much more than a fancy email client; things like those order status change notifications and contact reference numbers are usually baked right in. Add on top of that CRM?s other uses, and it is well worth your time to look into using a CRM in your business.

6: Search for yourself

Do some searching on the Internet for your business, and you may find yourself with a pile of things to take care of. For example, many sites list businesses? contact details, hours of operation, etc., and if those are wrong you will need to correct them. If there are reviews sites talking about your business, take the time to read each review. Then honestly evaluate whether they point to any problems you need to address or whether they give you a new opportunity for business.

While the temptation may be to post bogus reviews or to respond with nasty comments on the bad reviews, don?t. Instead, use these reviews as an opportunity for customer service! If a customer had a bad experience, publicly offer to make it right. You need to make this a regular part of your workflow too, because taking a month to respond is just as bad as not doing it at all.

7: Analyze your Web site

It?s easy to put up a Web site, but it is a lot more work to determine whether it is helping you generate sales. Start with Web log analysis software or Google Analytics to get an idea of what users are looking for, what pages are popular, how long it takes users to find the information they need, and so on. If you have a complex site or online applications, you may want to seriously consider hiring a usability expert. The cost of an expert can easily be paid for by an increase in sales if you do enough business online. Even if you can?t afford a usability expert, using your logged traffic and conducting informal listening labs can provide you with valuable data to improve your site.

8: Put Skype to work

I cannot say enough good things about using Skype for business. Is it perfect? Of course not. But it combines a ton of useful functions, such as VoIP, IM, international calling, Web conferencing, and screen sharing, into one package. And it has enough market penetration within businesses that you can use it for dealing with customers in a business-to-business situation much of the time. For me, being able to do Web conferencing and screen sharing is a critical part of doing business, and I can?t work without it. I like to backstop Skype with dedicated screen-sharing systems too, just in case I?m working with someone who does not have Skype, but I find that this is increasingly rare.

9: Hire a pro for your Web site

One of the great temptations for any small business is to try to save money by doing things themselves or having an unqualified friend or family member do them. And while that may work in the short term, the long term costs are often much higher than you think. This is especially true for a Web site, where the difference between an amateur job and a professional one is glaringly obvious. Sure, it may cost you some money to have a professional do your Web site, but they will get it done much faster than you will, and your time does have a value to it. More important, the professional will do things much better than you will. If you?ve ever decided not to purchase something from a company because its Web site did not feel professional or lacked things like a proper shopping cart and ordering system, you can see how easy it is to lose sales by doing your Web site yourself.

10: Use ?Real email? ? no excuses

I see this time and time again: The small business that would rather save $5 or $10 a month by using a free email account from Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!, etc., than to just buy a proper domain name and get good email. What?s the problem here? Well, for one thing it is unprofessional. It looks absolutely horrible to a potential customer to be dealing with a company too cheap to get email. If your target market is individual consumers or you have a unique offering that no one else does, you may be able to get away with it, but certainly not when working with other businesses.

Another problem is that the free email often has overly aggressive spam filtering that you can?t control. You do not have to give up the things you like about these services by getting ?real? email, and in fact, some free mail providers (including Google) have a paid option that gives you additional control, lets you use a domain name, and so on.

The Blendtec/Vitamix Challenge

When it comes to high-power blenders, there are only two names on the market worth considering: Blendtec and Vitamix.?

(If you know of any others, please tell us!)

Both brands are costly - expect to pay at least ?500 if you buy either product new. If you prepare smoothies regularly they are well worth the expense because the intense power behind the blades ensures that the fruit is soundly pulped to extract the best possible flavour.

Green smoothies that would be lumpy and bitty in a cheaper blender are smooth and creamy when made in a Vitamix or Blendtec. In addition they can be used to make many other food and drink recipes.

We use Blendtecs in The Flavour Co, but smoothie fanatic Declan has his own Vitamix and he volunteered to bring it in so we could compare both brands and see which one came out on top.

...and they're off! Blending a gorgeous fruity combination of strawberries and pineapple juice.

The Blendtec has a bit of an issue with spillage. Not a drop was spilled from the Vitamix, which has a tall, narrow, 2L jug.

Apart from that, the finished product was equally delicious from both blenders.

Just a little can go quite a distance. This old saying is true for most things in everyday life and it is particularly true in tangible estate. There are small modifications that you can do to your house that can increase curb appeal as well as the worth of your house.

Although some improvements can be costly and won't improve the value of your home, this is not forever the situation. The best methods to boost the value of your home is to enhance your home and bathrooms. A coat of color can also do wonders to your home!

Tips to Improve Your Kitchen Area

The kitchen is one of the most widely used rooms in the entire house. Because kitchens get a lot use, buyers pay particular attention to this area. You are able to drastically enhance the appearance of the kitchen with only several minor do it yourself projects.

One of the best ways to improve the appearance of the kitchen would be to put new hardware on the kitchen cabinets. This really is easy to do and does not cost too much either. Brightly colored tea towels, pot holders and tablecloths may also produce a cheerful and enticing mood which can attract buyers. Ensure your linens match the color combinations within the remaining kitchen!

silicone repair tape

Putting a coat of fresh paint on the kitchen walls will work wonders. Consider using a neutral color with warm tones. When you are at it, you might wish to paint other areas of your kitchen that appear to be worn too. You are able to paint your wooden kitchen floor as well as your cabinets. If you can not afford to replace the ground or cabinets, this may be what you want.

If you possess the time and the cash, you might want to replace your tired old sink and install a new, attractive model together with interesting hardware. This could really create kitchen appeal if you plan to market your home.

Remodeling the restroom

The restroom may not be at the top of your priority list when considering rooms to rework. However, bathroom remodels can certainly help to enhance the resale value of your home.

One of the easiest ways to improve the look of your bathroom is to re-grout the tile or clear the grouting that is in the bathroom. Then, you can buy a new rug and towels for that bathroom area. A pleasant matching shower curtain will nicely complete the look. For those who have a really small bathroom, these improvements could make an incredible difference.

If you have the time and money, you may want to put in a new shower or a new bathroom sink. You may even consider installing a new vanity for that sink, or painting the existing vanity and installing new cabinet pulls. This can drastically alter the look of the bathroom and improve the value of your house.

Among the keys to creating appeal would be to create the illusion that the bathroom is larger than it is really. To get this done, you can use soft lighting as well as light colors. Use bright colored accents and linens to provide the area a cheerful glow.

How to proceed If You Can Not Afford to Do Much

If you are short on time and funds can also be in short supply, the best thing that you can do is to re-paint within your house using neutral colors. This really is undoubtedly the easiest way to improve the need for your house without spending lots of money along the way.

Teachers and Administrators, Don?t Be Scared of Technology: It Won?t Replace the Classroom

Last year, our principal posed this question to our faculty: ?Can we be rendered obsolete by online learning??

The Khan Academy was receiving widespread attention for propagating the idea of an online learning experience for younger students. There was a general fear among school administrators and teachers in the K-12 education community that this could become an exclusively online learning system; that a computer could replace a teacher, and an ?online learning environment? could replace a classroom.

Could an online learning system replace a classroom? Yes, it could. Will it? Most definitely not.

The skills that are valued in education today, as opposed to ten years ago, require students to be able to do something with raw information. Students, in order to compete in this highly dynamic world, should be able to collaborate with others in order to create, synthesize, interpret, and evaluate information. These skills are not taught by rote learning alone, but rather are learned through discovery, inquiry, and exploration. Many of these skills cannot be successfully taught through an application or website, but must be experienced in class and facilitated by a teacher.

The Internet has changed society?s definition of a knowledgeable person. As recently as t he beginning of the 21st century, educated people were those who knew a great deal of information about one or many subjects. Now, many of us carry smartphones in our pockets. The actual worth of being full of information has, as a result of this accessibility, gone down a great deal. In this ?Age of Information,? access to facts and data is no longer available only to the educated elite, but is available to anyone with an Internet connection. So, as a society, what is an ?educated person?? What value does that person have? What information really matters, and what has been reduced to the level of trivia?

This is where the classroom comes in. A classroom is not a virtual dictionary or lecture hall where students can receive isolated pieces of information, but rather a place where students can learn how to distill and discern the value of the information they find on the Internet, as well as analyze bias, evaluate content, and construct their own knowledge.

Students need to be able to work with other students to come to these new understandings. In the classroom, the collaborative process is preparing our students to contribute to our economy that is now based more on service and face-to-face interactions than the manufacture of goods (as was the case fifty years ago.) This is the case regardless of the socioeconomic level of the school and its ability to access technology. Because of this shift, in today?s world we have to be literate in the collaborative process.

While online learning has become prevalent in college environments, for K-12 education, it is simply not sufficient. As John Dewey (2002) states, ?When the school introduces and trains each child of society into membership within such a little community?we shall have the deepest and best guaranty of a larger society which is worthy, lovely, and harmonious.? (p.124) Online learning has created more opportunities for colleges to convey information to students, but the education of younger students requires much more than the conveyance of information. Instead this burden of education includes the preparation of the student for interaction in our larger society.

Just like many other online learning tools, this exclusively online classroom idea can have its place. When Wikipedia first became commonly used, there was concern that it would be an academically unreliable source, and many educators banned its use by students. There is value to Wikipedia: it is a helpful tool in research as a jumping-off point to obtain further information. Similarly, we would be imprudent in completely discounting the value of learning sites like Khan Academy. When students need to reinforce certain skills, these online learning tools can be very helpful. Proponents of Khan Academy laud it for its ability to ensure that each student is held accountable for their own learning, and that certain skill reinforcement is not overlooked in the efforts of keeping up with the pace of the class. If education was simply about skill reinforcement, then this model might actually be a substitute for the traditional classroom; we as teachers know that skills are simply one facet of a well-rounded education.

While technology cannot replace a classroom, teachers would be remiss if they did not take advantage of the multitude of ways in which technological advances can help them further improve their craft. Now, teachers do not have to spend as much time teaching their students facts to memorize, and can devote more precious class time to engaging with the material on a level that requires students to think critically. Technology is a vehicle that makes this possible.

Effective teachers have been guiding students toward reaching deep and meaningful understandings of content for generations; teachers and their contributions are an invaluable part of the education system. It would be just as misguided to assume that teachers can be replaced by technology as it would be to assume that in today?s world, teaching can exist without technology. These ideas are not, and should not be, mutually exclusive. In the classroom, there must be a marriage of interaction, collaboration, and technology.

For example, our students used Skype to speak with a state assemblyman; though this face-to-face interaction occurred through a computer screen, students were able to have an educational experience that would not have been possible otherwise. The alternative, letter-writing, would not have as much of an impact on the students. While all interactions should not be conducted by means of technology, its purposeful supplemental use can revolutionize learning experiences without sacrificing that which we hold dear about education.

Teachers? skills must improve along with technological advances. While every year, new technologies are touted as indispensable classroom tools, only some will be worthwhile for actual use in the classroom. We teach our students critical thinking and evaluative skills; we need to apply those discerning skills to the multitude of technological tools we have the option of implementing in our classrooms.

Just because an educational tool isn?t perfect does not mean it should be disregarded. Just because an online classroom does not replace the role of a teacher doesn?t mean that this learning tool has no educational merit. Though there are thousands of technological tools that help enhance instruction, it doesn?t mean that teachers will be rendered obsolete.

(AP) ? Former England captain David Beckham has failed to make the British soccer team for the London Olympics.

The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder made Britain coach Stuart Pearce's shortlist of 35 but wasn't selected for the final 18-man squad as one of three players over the age of 23 allowed to compete in the games.

"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad," the 37-year-old Beckham said Thursday in a statement to The Associated Press. "Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."

Beckham had been widely expected to be selected for the Olympic squad after playing an instrumental role in in helping Sebastian Coe and his team win the bid in 2005 to host the games.

"As a Londoner, I will have been really proud to have played a small part in bringing the Olympics to my home town as part of Seb's team, and I can't wait for the games to begin and enjoy every moment along with the rest of Great Britain," Beckham said.

Britain's three overage players will be Welsh stars Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy and English defender Micah Richards, a person familiar with the situation said. He spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because details of the squad haven't been publicly released.

Giggs played alongside Beckham at Manchester United and Bellamy is a forward at Liverpool. Richards plays for Manchester City and appears to have been chosen ahead of Beckham to provide extra defensive cover.

The Olympic snub appears to spell the end of Beckham's career representing his country. England's most-capped outfield player made the last of his 115 appearances for England in 2009.

Boeing taps salesman Conner to run commercial planes

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Boeing Co appointed a new head of its commercial plane unit on Tuesday, turning to a veteran production expert and salesman to help gain the upper hand in its battle with Airbus for the $100 billion-a-year aircraft market.

The surprise move, just weeks before the Farnborough Airshow, comes as Boeing attempts to ramp up production of its civil aircraft, including the troubled 787, and regain its leading position in the key single-aisle market after losing a large American Airlines order to rival Airbus.

Boeing said Ray Conner would be the new head of its best-known unit with immediate effect, replacing another longtime Boeing executive, Jim Albaugh.

Conner, 57, joined Boeing in 1977 as a mechanic and worked his way up the company's production, supply chain and marketing operations to become head of sales. Albaugh, 62, who came to prominence at Boeing's defense unit, is to retire on October 1 -- three years before Boeing's standard retirement age -- after 37 years with the company.

The move was greeted positively by industry analysts, who applauded the appointment of a sales-oriented head in place of the engineering-minded Albaugh.

"Commercial aircraft sales is a very customer-centric job," said Carter Leake, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets. "Conner is more from true-blue aircraft sales than Albaugh. Arguably Conner has touched more Boeing customers than any person in the entire company."

SALES JOB

One industry source said Albaugh wanted to hand over the reins now so that his successor would have a chance to represent Boeing at Farnborough, one of the most important events in the company's calendar where it will be under pressure to announce new orders.

"It's a good time to step aside and open the door to increased effort on sales where Conner has most recently focused his attention," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Stephen Levenson.

Conner was only recently appointed to his second stint in the top sales job after a shake-up prompted by Airbus marching into core Boeing territory last July and persuading American Airlines to buy 260 of its narrow-body A320s, alongside 200 Boeing 737s.

The 737 is the work-horse for most airlines and Boeing's biggest cash generator, but Boeing upset some customers by delaying a decision on what to do with its replacement, eventually deciding to follow Airbus and offer a revamped version, called the 737 MAX, instead of building an all-new airplane.

Since the launch of the MAX last August, the quiet-spoken Conner has led Boeing's rebound in the aircraft market and the company is expected to outsell Airbus this year for the first time since 2006, largely on the back of orders for the MAX.

After Farnborough, Conner must turn his attention to Boeing's audacious attempt to ramp up production of its revolutionary, carbon-fiber 787 to 10 a month by the end of next year from 3.5 a month now, as well as oversee increased production of 737s and 777s.

In a memo to Boeing employees sent on Tuesday and obtained by Reuters, Conner said he aimed to focus on delivering the planes in Boeing's bulging order book.

"Our job going forward together in the near term is to stay the course on the product and services strategies that have resulted in our record backlog, and to turn up the gain on performance and execution to ensure we meet our commitments," said Conner in the memo.

MANAGEMENT CHANGE

One analyst said Albaugh's retirement signaled a broader process of management change at Boeing.

"The generational shift in Boeing management is now almost done, with only CEO Jim McNerney left of the old guard," said Rob Stallard at RBC Capital Markets. "Who succeeds him remains to be seen, but Boeing now has two relatively new and capable executives heading each division, and each could be vying for the top slot in due course."

Dennis Muilenburg took over as head of Boeing's defense, space and security unit in 2009, when Albaugh left to take charge at the commercial airplanes unit as the company looked for a steady hand to guide the early production of the troubled 787 Dreamliner program.

With 787 production now stabilized, Albaugh's retirement is the second high-profile departure after Boeing's finance chief James Bell retired earlier this year.

Industry-watchers agree that Albaugh achieved that, while he also brought the new 747-8 jumbo to market and presided over an unprecedented labor agreement at Boeing's volatile Seattle-area plants.

Albaugh's support was key to Boeing's winning back a multibillion-dollar U.S. Air Force contract to build 179 new refueling planes that had been awarded to Northrop Grumman Corp and its European partner, Airbus parent EADS .

"Realistically, he's accomplished everything he was trying to do at Boeing Commercial Aircraft," said defense consultant Loren Thompson at the Lexington Institute.

One senior industry official said Albaugh likely wanted to exit Boeing at the "top of his game".

"He's run Boeing defense. He's run Boeing commercial, and he's not going to be CEO at Boeing."

? Low impact/endurance sports?namely baseball, volleyball and gymnastics

? Aerobics?great for improving lung capacity and durability

2) Clean House

Another great way to manage asthma is to keep your living space as clean as possible. Asthma is often either directly caused or set off by allergens. Things such as:

? Dust mites

? Pet dander

? Pests

? Pollen

? Strong odors

Keeping the home immaculate and free of these triggers can greatly help improve the day-to-day quality of life of many asthmatics.

3) Breathing Techniques

Breathing techniques have recently made a resurgence in popularity as a way to counteract and manage asthma symptoms and attacks. Although not always enough by themselves to keep asthma under control and at bay, they are a great natural supplement in your battle with asthma.

There are many different breathing techniques to choose from for asthma relief. Studies have found as well that the actual technique isn?t as important as simply maintaining and practicing breath control. This is because all breathing techniques help you stay calm and focused during an asthma attack, which can help reduce risk as well as the severity of the attack.

4) Miscellaneous

There are other miscellaneous natural asthma relief techniques and tips. For example, vitamin C is supposed to help not only your immune system, but improve the antioxidants found in the lining of the bronchi. Try drinking a couple glasses a day and see if you notice a difference in your asthma occurrences and symptoms.

Taking a hot shower might also help reduce asthma symptoms. By taking as hot a shower as you can stand and letting the water fall on your back it can help break up the mucus causing asthma. Also, the steam from the shower helps ease your breathing.

There are plenty of natural relief techniques for asthma suffers. There are also hundreds of natural substances and minerals that people believe to be a natural remedy for asthma. However, none of these are proven, and often their dosage or use with other minerals varies greatly. If you?re going to try these you should be extremely cautious, only trying a gradual dose of one natural remedy at a time. It?s hard to know how one?s body will react, especially since asthma tends to be largely allergy based.

For daily relief from asthma symptoms, try exercising regularly, keeping a clean house, and practicing breathing techniques. These combined natural, everyday techniques can be used at home and will hopefully help you better manage your asthma.

How Animals Can Help With Senior Care

When it comes to senior care, animal therapy can provide significant benefits that few types of medical or other therapeutic strategies can rival. However, a large amount of the recorded improvements observed during interactions between seniors and animals remain unexplained. Nevertheless, it's not something that needs explaining; for many people, animal therapy just works, and it might work for your elderly family members as well. The following are 5 ways that pet therapy for seniors can improve their quality of life.

1.) Companionship

One of the biggest difficulties facing the elderly is loneliness. In fact, many people believe that because humans are such highly social creatures, loneliness can actually lead to a decline in emotional and physical health. Animal companionship fills this empty gap in a senior's life. If cared for properly, animals can provide constant companionship, affection, and in some cases even improve mobility issues by helping a person stay active.

2.) Keep Busy/Distraction

Elderly people with dementia or chronic pain can benefit from animal therapy because the interaction with a pet can help to distract them from their discomfort and focus their mind on other things. Animals provide plenty of reason to do more than just watch television, stare out the window or sleep. In fact, because animals are sometimes known to be able to sense emotional upset or physical discomfort, they may actively seek to engage their owners when they sense this, providing reassurance and a warm, welcome distraction.

3.) Healthy Routines

As we age the routines that we keep tend to change. With kids no longer in the home and in some cases no spouse or other family to care for, the elderly sometimes stop following any routine at all -- an unhealthy choice as the mind and body need to stay active in order to maintain their functions.

Like humans, animals also function well with a routine. They need to be taken out to relieve themselves, fed, groomed and interacted with on a regular, several-times-a-day basis. When an elderly person has a pet, they often find it much easier to maintain a routine because they MUST do so in order to care for their animals.

The need to care for other living beings is a critical human need, so a pet-related routine shouldn't be looked at as a hindrance or bother -- it could prove extremely beneficial because it will allow the pet owner to have something to care about/for again, giving new meaning to their life.

4.) Emotional & Physical Connection

A common problem with many seniors is withdrawal from relationships and social interaction; especially when dementia is present. Having an animal or taking part in pet therapy can help to mitigate this serious concern, as seniors often take readily to animals whereas they may withdraw even from people they have known their entire lives. Having emotional connections is critical for sound mental health.

Additionally, just the act of petting or playing with a pet can provide that critical need that all humans have for physical affection with a being that they care about.

5.) Longer Life

Many studies and a great deal of anecdotal evidence suggest that people who have pets live longer. This seems to be especially true in the case of elderly people, as keeping a routine, having companionship and an emotional connection with an animal can help to improve their physical health. And if their health improves, then it's likely that they'll live longer, better-quality lives.
