Shattered Australia try to shrug off Olympic relay blow

Swimming powerhouses Australia were looking to regroup after the shattering blow of the James Magnussen-led team bombing out of the medals in the 100m freestyle relay at the London Olympics.

The Australians had been banking on world champion Magnussen leading the way to victory, yet the relay team spectacularly imploded when the pressure was on in the final, won by France over the defending champions United States.

Magnussen and James Roberts came to the Olympics as the two fastest 100m swimmers along with former world record holder Eamon Sullivan and top-ten sprinter Matt Targett.

But when the crunch was on the Aussies went missing, raising doubts about the men's team's ability to make an impact in the remaining swimming finals at the London Olympics.

Significantly, the two top-rated sprinters, Magnussen (48.03) and Roberts (48.09), put in the slowest split times of the Australian team.

Magnussen looked a shattered man, photographed with his head in his hands on the pool deck moments after Frenchman Yannick Agnel touched out American Ryan Lochte to clinch relay gold.

"Words can't describe how I feel," Magnussen said. "I don't know what went wrong. I felt like I was going really well into that race.

"I did a 47.3s in the morning and it's the easiest swim I've done in months. I just couldn't back up in the final, maybe it (heat swim) just took a bit out of the tank.

"Obviously (I'm) bloody really disappointed, but it happens.

"That's my first big disappointment at international level and I have to regroup from there and try and back up tomorrow (Tuesday's 100m freestyle)."

Much was centred on Magnussen's anticipated success at the Olympics but the relay team's inability to medal may have lasting repercussions for the Australian men in London.

Australian head coach Leigh Nugent has told Magnussen to "get over it" and move on.

"They just have to get over it and get on with it," Nugent said. "The weight of expectation just might have overpowered them.

"Anyone competing at this level in sport, if they can't overcome the disappointments, they probably haven't got what it takes in the long run."

The stunning loss comes after Australia's women won their 100m freestyle relay on Saturday, and the men are looking for a gold medal which eluded them in the pool at the 2008 Beijing Games.

"I think more than anything one race doesn't decide your fate for the rest of the meet," Sullivan said.

"Everyone has a bad day and unfortunately James (Magnussen) had, still not a horrible day, but just a bad day in his expectations.

"He has one day to relax and get himself together for that 100m and work his way through it. You move on."

Active@ File Recovery for Windows

Active@ File Recovery for Windows stands out as one of the most powerful and easy-to-use data recovery apps. It's a close second to our Editors' Choice, OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional (4 stars), and includes some effective and user-friendly features that OnTrack doesn't match. It's also the only program I've ever tested with an at-sign in its name, but that's probably not a significant distinction.

Like the other data-recovery apps I tested, Active@ File Recovery offers quick and deep scans of your hard disk for lost or deleted files, but Active@ stands out for a product design that seems as well suited to nervous beginners as to experts. For example, Active@'s lists of recoverable files on my hard disk used headings like "Microsoft Office Documents" instead of OnTrack's heading "zip-msword," so non-experts are more likely to find the files they want.

On the other hand, OnTrack outclassed Active@ in user-friendliness when listing recoverable music files on a formatted USB stick: OnTrack listed the actual track names, while Active@ only listed arbitrary filenames, so I had to recover each file individually and open it in a music-playing app to see what song it contained.

Activating Active@
When you start up Active@ File Recovery for Windows, it scans your system for disk drives, and then you have to decide for yourself what to do with the drives listed. In contrast, OnTrack starts with a wizard interface that provides the hand-holding you probably need when you're panicked about lost files. With Active@, you select a drive, then choose Quick Scan or "SuperScan" (which means a deep scan) from the toolbar and let the app take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to scan your drive.

In my tests, Active@ wasn't as user-friendly as it should be when it finished this scan, because its list of deleted files didn?t show any of the files I wanted to recover. Instead, I had to switch to a tab labeled "Signature Files," where it listed "found" files, including the files I wanted. I don't think it's helpful to put "deleted" and "found" files in different lists, and if I hadn?t explored the interface, I might never have found the files I wanted.

File Recovery
Once I opened the "Signature Files" list, things got easier. I right-clicked on a list of "docx" files in order to recover a lost Microsoft Word file, and I could click on a toolbar icon to display a barebones preview of the contents of each file. (One curious glitch: apparently at random, the app sometimes displayed an error message "Unable to create temporary storage for previewing," but other times it previewed the file.) When I found the file I wanted, I chose Recover from the right-click menu and saved the file to another drive. A friendly option in the program then opened an Explorer window on the folder where I saved the recovered file.

You don't need to pay for Active@ File Recovery until you're confident that it can recover your files?because it successfully previewed them. The freely downloadable demo version can recover files up to 64KB in size, and you can buy an activation key for the full version if you need to recover larger files.

Features
Like all the other apps in this survey (except the no-cost, 3-star Recuva), Active@ could create a cloned image of a drive so that I could try to recover files from the image instead of from the actual physical drive. This feature is especially useful when trying to recover files from a drive that's physically failing, because you?ll still have the image even if the drive becomes unreadable. Unlike OnTrack and Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery ?(3 stars), Active@ doesn't include a low-level disk viewer that displays the raw hex codes on your disk, but that?s not a feature that most users will miss.

I liked working with Active@ File Recovery for Windows, and it let me recover the same files I could recover with OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional?but it couldn?t match OnTrack's ability to display the actual track names of the 500+ music files that both programs recovered from a formatted USB stick. You can't go wrong with Active@'s app, but OnTrack edges it out in the competition for our Editors' Choice.

Apple's Jony Ive refutes 'godlessness' of mass-produced gadgets

17 hrs.

Apple's senior vice president of industrial design, Sir?Jonathan Ive, defended our gadget-obsessed natures during a recent speech. There's nothing inherently godless about making products in volume, he explained.

As Wired UK's Olivia Solon reported,?Ive gave the speech during the British Embassy's Creative Summit. He talked a lot about how Apple doesn't focus on making money, but on building good products. (The money will come as long as the products are solid and the company is "operationally?competent," he says.)

The trick to getting?things just right, Ive explained while dismissing Augustus Pugin ??an artist who famously rallied against mass production ??is to "invest an incredible amount of care into each [product]."

"You can make one chair carelessly, thoughtlessly, that is valueless. Or you can make a phone [that will eventually go on to be mass produced] and invest so many years of care and have so many people so driven to make the very best phone way beyond any sort of functional imperative that there is incredible value," Ive elaborated, according to Wired UK.

Folks who've been following iPhone rumors from the very start?? when the gadget was barely a twinkle in every tech reporter's eye?? likely smiled as they read those words. Apple has a tendency to take all the time necessary to build what it deems to be a great product. It doesn't rush anything, and it famously doesn't rely heavily?on market research, which, as Ive points out "will?guarantee mediocrity and will only work out whether you are going to offend anyone."

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

In Poland, Romney gets endorsed by Lech Walesa

GDANSK, Poland (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is spending the night in Poland, the final stop on a three-nation tour designed to boost his foreign policy resume with voters back home.

In Gdansk, Romney was endorsed by former Polish President Lech Walesa (lek vah-WEHN'-sah), who led the Solidarity anti-government movement in the 1970s.

Walesa suggested the U.S. needs Romney's leadership to restore its standing in the world. He told Romney: "Be successful."

Walesa's backing was meant to influence Catholics and union members in the U.S. But Solidarity's current leadership distanced itself from the event and criticized Romney as hostile to unions and labor rights.

Romney is set to meet Tuesday with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and deliver a speech before returning home.

The trip also took Romney to London and Jerusalem.

Brightest and hottest stars have close, turbulent relationships, study suggets

The brightest and hottest stars in our galaxy tend to have short, violent lives, often drawing gas from each other and frequently merging to form a single star, a new study indicates.

A surprising number of massive stars in our Milky Way galaxy are part of close stellar duos, a new study finds, but most of these companion stars have turbulent relationships ? with one "vampire star" sucking gas from the other, or the two stars violently merging to form a single star.

Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile studied massive O-type stars, which are very hot and incredibly bright. These stars, which have surface temperatures of more than 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit (30,000 degrees Celsius) live short, violent lives, but they play key roles in the evolution of galaxies.

The researchers discovered that more than 70 percent of these massive stars have close companions, making up so-called binary systems in which two stars orbit each other.

While this percentage is far more than was previously expected, the astronomers were more surprised to find that majority of these stellar pairs have tumultuous relationships with one another, said study co-author Selma de Mink, of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

"We already knew that massive stars are very often in binaries," de Mink told SPACE.com. "What is very surprising to us is that they're so close, and such a large fraction is interacting. If a star has a companion so close next to it, it will have a very different evolutionary path. Before, this was very complicated for us to model, so we were hoping it was a minority of stars. But, if 70 percent of massive stars are behaving like this, we really need to change how we view these stars." [Top 10 Star Mysteries]

Studying stellar behemoths

Type O stars drive galaxy evolution, but these stellar giants can also exhibit extreme behavior, garnering the nickname "vampire stars" for the way they suck matter from neighboring companions.

"These stars are absolute behemoths," study lead author Hugues Sana, of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, said in a statement. "They have 15 or more times the mass of our sun and can be up to a million times brighter."

These massive stars typically end their lives in violent explosions, such as core-collapse supernovas or gamma-ray bursts, which are so luminous they can be observed throughout most of the universe.

For the new study, the astronomers analyzed the light coming from 71 O-type stars ? a mix of single and binary stars ? in six different star clusters, all located roughly 6,000 light-years away.

TUATHA DE DANANN Trova Di Danu music review by kenethlevine

1 stars I am a staunch supporter of the "non traditional marriage" of celtic folk with rock music, even hard rock. Over the years, mostly British Isles bands have been the finest proponents of this blend - POGUES, RUNRIG, MEN THEY COULDN'T HANG, WATERBOYS, and OYSTERBAND all come to mind, as much for their political and human interest themes that transcended the usual drunken bar fight lyrics as for their considerable musicality. On the other hand relatively few bands convincingly melded metal to folk. The best of these I have heard is MAGO DE OZ from Spain, to whom TUATHA DE DANANN owes the greatest debt of gratitude. However based on this disk, I doubt that MAGO DE OZ is much flattered by the imitation.

For every poignant RUNRIG anthem there is a tepid WOLFSTONE regurgitation; for every James Joyce rivaling POGUES romp is a warmed over hand me down from TEMPEST. For every well sequenced and executed ballad or metal fest by MAGO DE OZ is a frenetic and soulless ballad or metal fest (both sound pretty much the same anyway) by TUATHA DE DANANN that conveys a failure to assimilate the virtues of the folk genre prior to alloying it. Most of this is a crass and hard to forgive exercise in amplifying and speeding up jigs or reels, or dressing a death growl in a kilt. Songs like "Bella Nature", "Lover of the Queen", "Land's Revenge" and "Arrival" are even worse than that and essentially torturous. Sometimes after a minute or so of tentative intro, they realize they have locked themselves in and the only way out is with a hammer and a groan. The exceptions would be the lighter "Land of Youth", the guttural but rousing "Believe it's True" and the atypical and more traditionally celtic title cut with female vocals. But the damage inflicted by the worst this group has to offer neutralizes these gains many times over.

Perhaps the band's inactivity since 2004 means that it has been offered as a sacrifice to Danu, the water goddess from which the it derives its name, and she has accepted selflessly for the benefit of bands like DANU and DE DANANN, not to mention listeners like me.
