UFC 166 medical suspensions: Junior dos Santos out indefinitely, Cain Velasquez may have broken jaw

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and two others received indefinite medical suspensions in the aftermath of UFC 166, according to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Dos Santos lost via a bloody, brutal fifth-round TKO stoppage against UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in Houston, TX at the main event of UFC 166. Due to the extensive damage dos Santos suffered, the 29-year-old will be held out indefinitely pending clearance from a throat, nose and ear physician.

Velasquez, meanwhile, is to be sidelined until April 18, 2014 due to a potential broken jaw, although the champion may return earlier if cleared by a physician.

Fellow main card loser Shawn Jordan received an identical suspension to dos Santos, while Tim Boetsch received an indefinite medical suspension pending clearance from an ophthalmologist in light of his controversial victory over C.B. Dollaway.

Three additional fighters on the card received significant medical suspensions, as T.J. Waldburger and Darrell Montague will be sidelined until January 18, 2014 for precautionary reasons, and Diego Sanchez will be held out until January 18, 2014 due to the severe cuts he received during his classic battle against Gilbert Melendez. Notably, Waldburger left the cage on a stretcher and received immediate transport to a hospital after suffering several late punches during his knockout loss to Adlan Amagov.
