HPV Genital Warts In Men: Genital Warts, HPV, and Their ...

Unlike the carcinogenic growth of cells in other parts of the human body, the genital warts is possibly the only link between a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and Cancer, as the latter could result from the manifestation of the former. With cases of STD growing in leaps, it is not surprising that cases of genital warts are also growing in bounds. Now add to this the alarming factor of being ?contagious?, and the exponential picture is complete.

The human papilloma virus (HPV) has been identified as the causative agent that makes inroads through breach in skin and via the sexual act, indicating that the latter is not necessarily the sole factor for the viral invasion. Women can also transmit the HPV virus to the unborn child during pregnancy or delivery. So far over forty strains of HPV have been identified that effect the genital area, of which 2-3 strains are very common and cause the visible genital warts, whereas there are 5-6 strains that are not very common but directly linked to cell carcinoma in the genital area. This fact directly links the genital warts with cancer.

What are the available treatments for HPV genital warts in men? The most widely used treatment is Podophyllotoxin cream or solution, which topical treatment could be applied at home or at the doctor?s office. Podophyllin Solution and Trichloroacetic Acid are used too, but since they are stronger and carry the risks of burning the skin, the solutions are normally administered by a nurse or other medical professional. Cauterizing (burning the warts), cryotherapy, and laser treatment are also available and so is surgery, but they are highly intense treatments, which are also costlier than the other available options. In the past few years, various herbal remedies have been used and reported to treat successfully this stubborn infection.

But this does not detect HPV and therefore an abnormal Pap smear is done to confirm that the changes or bumps in the genitals are caused by HPV. Women with abnormal Pap smears should be examined further for cervical problems (usually through a colposcope) or followed closely by a doctor. There are several new tests that can detect the genetic material of HPV (Vira-pap). There is a connection between HPV infection and cancer in both men and women. Mild genital warts however are not the symptoms for cancer.

How can the genital warts in men be prevented? So far, a vaccine against two of the HPV types that cause genital warts has been developed and approved for women only, but it is expected the same vaccine to be approved for male patients as well. Prevention that is more feasible is reducing the number of partners and abstinence, and even though the use of condoms is not a sure-fire way to prevent the infection, it decreases the chance and protects against other sexually transmitted diseases. If you believe that you have contracted this infection, do not start any form of treatment before seeing a doctor, and you should also inform your partner as soon as you have been diagnosed as well.
