Career Opportunity: Communications Officer, BC Aboriginal Child ...

The BC Aboriginal Child Care Society (ACCS) is seeking a Communications Officer to support and play a vital role in the communication and promotion of the Society?s Aboriginal Child Care Resource and Support Services Program (ACCRSP) by ensuring effective communication links are maintained with the Aboriginal community, governments and other community stakeholders involved in Aboriginal early childhood program and services in British Columbia.

Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Officer is responsible for internal and external communications, media relations, education and promotional plans, and publication management with outcomes that support the Society?s overall goals and ACCRSP program. The Communications Officer also participates in designing community and caregiver awareness campaigns about the importance, role and impact of quality early childhood programs on families and communities.

Principal Duties:

  • Develop, coordinate and implement a communications strategy and work plan;
  • Design, write and develop communications, outreach and communications tools and reports and products for a diverse range of audiences and community stakeholders
  • Establish links with relevant community and academic organizations as well as funders;
  • Develop website content and manage updates and maintenance;
  • Develop, update and maintain information data bases;
  • Oversee production of Caring for our Children newsletter and other communication materials; and
  • Provide media and communications support to the Board and staff as necessary.

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Bachelor?s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field;
  • Minimum of three years experience working in communications, public relations or journalism;
  • Superior writing/communications and web based technical skills; highly creative;
  • Must be able to work as a team member;
  • Extensive knowledge and experience working with Aboriginal and First Nations communities;
  • Able to work independently with the ability to function with tight timelines, changing priorities; proven ability to manage several projects simultaneously;
  • Proficiency in web design, social media, word processing, data base management;
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently with Microsoft Office tools; and
  • Ability to orient to and learn new software.

Aboriginal ancestry preferred: The ideal candidate will have experience working with Aboriginal and First Nations communities and be sensitive to the cultural and economic realities of Aboriginal people in British Columbia.

Conditions:

Must have a valid driver?s licence and be willing to travel. Must be available, if necessary, to work evenings, weekends or statutory holidays. Applicants will be subject to a satisfactory criminal record check.

Salary Range: $46,000-$49,000 per annum (commensurate with qualifications and experience)

Closing Date: May 16, 2011

Duration: One year term contract with the possibility of renewal.
